Joseph J. Fox, Jr. Memorial Scholarship
Joseph J. Fox, Jr., a graduate of Frostburg State University, was a dedicated educator who understood that reading skills were necessary for students to succeed in academic content areas, enjoy life-long learning and receive pleasure from reading books and other written materials. During his twenty year career as a middle school English teacher in Frederick County Public Schools, he encouraged students and other teachers to reach for these goals. Mr. Fox became very active in the State of Maryland International Reading Association Council (SoMIRAC) from its very beginning. He served as president of the local Frederick County Reading Council, as well as president of SoMIRAC, and as State Coordinator where he served as our liaison with the International Reading Association. He was a man of integrity whose commitment and contagious enthusiasm inspired those of us who knew him and had the opportunity to work with him.
Kendall named 2026 Scholarship Recipient
The State of Maryland Literacy Association (SoMLA) is proud to announce that Jamison Kendall of Queen Anne’s County High School has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 SoMLA Scholarship.
Jamison has demonstrated a strong commitment to education, leadership, and service throughout his high school career. As a participant in his school's Teacher Academy pathway, he has actively pursued opportunities to develop the skills and experiences necessary for a future career in education. His dedication to serving others is also evident through his volunteer work with the Best Buddies program, where he has supported meaningful connections and inclusive opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
This fall, following his graduation from Queen Anne’s County High School, Jamison will attend Catawba College, where he plans to pursue a degree in education and continue his journey toward becoming a teacher.
