The Advocacy/Government Relations Committee shall promote advocacy for literacy by communicating with the public, press, and policy makers about reading, inform SoMLA members about legislation regarding literacy at the state and national levels, and solicit members' involvement in advocacy through a variety of activities.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has announced the Committee placements for new members of the House of Representatives. Rep. David Trone, D- Maryland will be joining the House Education and Labor Committee. This will give Maryland a presence on one of the
Committees who will oversee Education Legislation before it comes before a vote in the House. Another notable new member who has been assigned to this Committee is Congresswoman Jahana Hayes, D - Conn., who was National Teacher of the Year in 2016. She campaigned on providing teachers with more resources, more career training and making college more affordable.

Every Student Succeeds Act

The Department of Education has developed guidelines for funding for the Every Student Succeeds Act that will cover professional development funding from teacher training programs through administrator development. The attached document is an outline of their plans for this money under the new legislation.
